博古架的取材，早期是用松木、楠木，后来改用榉木、酸枝木、花梨木、抽木、红木，甚至紫檀木。一般来说，明式的博古架多用黄花梨木，色泽较浅，木纹明显；清式的博古架多用紫檀木、鸡翅木，色泽较深，但一般说明式的工艺水准比清式的更高。苏州拙政园见山楼内有一套古代家具，其中有博古架一台。博古架上空格错落有致，简练大方，古朴浑厚，精巧玲珑，有典型的明代风格，它是用红酸枝木制作而成，色彩风格庄重典雅。在博古架选取的木材中，以紫檀木为最佳。它的色泽紫亮光洁，木质红腻坚硬。也有用黄杨木、枣木的，但这些也并非是唯一制作博古架的材料，有的用普通的木材经过匠心独具的设计制作，也能达到古色古香的艺术效果。
